Over the years, the JCRS has seen a rise in
the number of children being reared by grandparents and other guardians,
who are not in the formal foster care system. Many of these
grandparents report feeling isolated, overwhelmed, uninformed and are
craving support. They are faced with a host of problems regarding legal
concerns, financial hardships, health and housing issues, special needs
grandchildren, and social isolation.
Thus, JCRS recently started the regional
Grandparents', Special Parents', and Guardians' Club. The purpose
is to provide support and education to caregivers. The Club also
provides special recognition to those youth who are faced with the most
difficult life circumstances due to family disintegration.
A component of this club is the
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group. This group meets
once a month at the JCRS Greater New Orleans office. Experts in the
fields of law, health, and child psychology sometimes address the group.
If you are interested in
joining the Grandparents Club or Support Group, please contact Lisa
Tabb, Director of Programs.
